Non-equilibrium phase transitions

چکیده
These lecture notes give a basic introduction to the physics of phase transitions under non-equilibrium conditions. The notes start with a general introduction to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics followed by four parts. The first one discusses the universality class of directed percolation, which plays a similar role as the Ising model in equilibrium statistical physics. The second one gives an overview about other universality classes which have been of interest in recent years. The third part extends the scope to models with long-range interactions, including memory effects and so-called Lévy flights. Finally, the fourth part is concerned with deposition-evaporation phenomena leading to wetting transitions out of equilibrium.

Discontinuous Jamming Transitions in Soft Materials
Many systems in nature exhibit transitions between fluid-like states and solidlike states, or “jamming transitions”. Such transitions can be induced by changing thermodynamic quantities, such as temperature or pressure (equilibrium transitions) or by changing applied stress (non-equilibrium transitions). There is a strong theoretical foundation for understanding equilibrium phase transitions th...
متن کاملNon-equilibrium Phase transitions in condensed matter physics
This paper gives a brief review of phase transition far from equilibrium, especially the universality classes of two main classes of non-equilibrium phase transitions. It also briefly point out the current conditions of the experimental study.
متن کاملMultiplicative Noise in Non-equilibrium Phase Transitions: A tutorial
Stochastic phenomena in which the noise amplitude is proportional to the fluctuating variable itself, usually called multiplicative noise, appear ubiquitously in physics, biology, economy and social sciences. The properties of spatially extended systems with this type of stochasticity, paying special attention to the non-equilibrium phase transitions these systems may exhibit, are reviewed here...
متن کاملNon-Equilibrium Thermodynamics of Ferroelectric Phase Transitions
It is well known that the Landau theory of continuous phase transitions is a milestone in the process of the development of phase transition theories. Though it does not tally with the nature of phase transitions in the critical regions, the Landau theory as a phenomenological one has been very successful in many kinds of phase transitions such as the ferroelectric phase transitions, i.e. the v...
متن کاملEquilibrium and out of equilibrium phase transitions in systems with long range interactions and in 2D flows
In self-gravitating stars, two dimensional or geophysical flows and in plasmas, long range interactions imply a lack of additivity for the energy; as a consequence, the usual thermodynamic limit is not appropriate. However, by contrast with many claims, the equilibrium statistical mechanics of such systems is a well understood subject. In this proceeding, we explain briefly the classical approa...
